Judas' Last Prayer
by Kenneth Martin
Dear FATHER, kind MOTHER, all powers being
In this darkest hour am I really seeing
Why so gladly I swallow the thorns of derision
No man on earth can shake my decision
Thou Son be the witness of my storm-battered soul
A blood thick as truth laps this God-traitor’s role!
When Master first told me and I struggled for nerve
There was a moment of wonder: Which hand shall I serve?
Seemed the landscape within me turned fierce as a storm
Wherein curled seven serpents on a yarn blanket warm
Judas recoiled at the thought of His harm!
Sacred love deeply hidden broke heavy with sorrow
That the bridge between heaven cannot stretch tomorrow
Judas wept for the time that was not left to borrow
For what is a man, Lord, but a ricket of fears
Held fast by his joys and renewed by his years
Clings dead-steadfastly unto even his tears!
Your Wisdom calls closer, I stand on the Mount
Below me his captors have swelled beyond count
Guard my steps, Father, see me safe to the clearing
Where the hellhounds of Rome shall soon be appearing
Consent then one favor by Heavenly Host
The strength to betray Him I love the most
As the darkness glows blacker, I already see Light
Is it the shadow of Him who vanquished the night?
And are you not, Father, the One and the same
Quintessence of power, eternity’s flame
Shield me, O Father, for I lay down my name
Amen
